RSDA repurposes shipping containers to create home on Indian farm

Rakhee Shobhit Design Associates used shipping containers to create two residential units at opposite ends of farmland in the Aravalli hills near Udaipur, India.
The container house was commissioned as an out-of-town retreat for a client and his family who wanted to get away from the city and feel closer to nature during the coronavirus pandemic.
Indian company Rakhee Shobhit Design Associates (RSDA) has responded by repurposing old shipping containers to quickly create a range of vibrant living spaces that offer an ‘escapism’ with minimal landscape impact.
“Instead, he uses industrial materials as an exoskeleton to create a warm and comfortable environment through a spatial dialogue between interior and environment.”
“As an attempt to be mindful of resource consumption and ecology in a very modern world, this unique residence redefines real estate consumption as it is made entirely of shipping containers,” the studio added.
The container home consists of two structures, named Champa and Chameli after the family’s two dogs, which are located at opposite ends of the lot to provide everyone with a sense of privacy.
The Champa, the larger of two units, was created for the client’s mother from five containers, each 8 feet by 20 feet. The smaller Chameli is a combination of two 8′ x 40′ containers.
Both units are raised 15 inches off the ground to reduce the risk of flooding, and their construction is reinforced and insulated to allow large areas of glazing to be inserted. Their facades are painted green to blend in with the surrounding landscape.
For the smaller Chameli apartment, RSDA created a more open floor plan with a living room on one side and a bedroom and bathroom on the other, a separated kitchen with a hanging fireplace.
In Champa, a more traditional layout consists of a bedroom, living room, kitchen and a small gym, separated by a wooden partition.
Full-length windows in both units feature sliding doors that open onto terraced wooden decks protected from sun and rain by a wicker bamboo roof.
“The minimalist interior palette echoes the notion of modularity while displaying attractive and clean lines,” the statement reads.
“Wide glass walls framed in insulated aluminum open up the façade, highlighting the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces and enhancing visibility.”
Other recent projects using shipping containers include a mobile home in Poland and an entertainment center in Austin, Texas.
